You've Been Eating Pizza Wrong Your Entire Life - This Is The RIGHT Way
Before we bring you the slice of action you are eagerly awaiting, we just want to settle something first and foremost. Even though this tip is on a knead-to-know basis, don’t worry - we aren’t going to suggest you start using a knife and fork, or adding pineapple (although the jury is still out on this one), so there’s no need to panic. However, we are sorry to let you know that you’ve probably been eating pizza wrong your entire life, especially the best kind - the stuffed crust.
According to Vipul Chawla, President of Pizza Hut International, one should be “eating pizza backwards” starting with the crust. This unique idea, that sets them apart from their competition is how Pizza Hut has managed to stay an icon and culinary disruptor in the industry as they celebrate 25 years since launching their innovative stuffed crust that is now featured in over 110 countries.
During a live event today (6th October) to celebrate their impressive anniversary, Ana Maria Rodriguez, the Chief Food Innovation and Quality Officer at Pizza Hut International let slip the right way to eat their stuffed crust. “You shouldn’t be eating the tip first…”, the starting place for most - but rather “…the crust”. “The very best part of [our] pizza is in the edge” Rodriguez stated. Who listed the reasons for the controversial statement including the over 40 best-selling iterations for cheese-lovers to their original classic crust, which was designed over 25 years ago after employees realised that the majority of pizza eaters were leaving the crusts behind while consuming their pies. Pizza Hut wanted to change this; make every bite as delicious as the last.
And what better way than by adding extra cheese.
The soft, gooey cheese stuffed inside their dough was created by a former food scientist and took over 3 years to develop and was turned down 11 times by the head pizza makers, but lucky for us all they persevered and believed in their concept regardless of the skepticism it received in the early days. Rodriquez comments that: "the drive and passion to deliver the best pizza brings people together is what brought Stuffed Crust to market. It broke the rules, putting cheese where no one imagined. Today, it continues to surprise and delight with new flavours, shapes and stuffing [including unique fusions such as Kebab Meat, Salmon Roe, Lays Crushed Chips and Durian Fruit] - and all starts with that first bite - on the edge”
There have been multiple mathematic and scientific studies looking into the perfect and right way to eat pizza, over the years, including folding your pizza like a taco - which Pizza Hut confirm was also acceptable. But as they continue to develop and innovate their crusts the ‘taco’ style could soon be a thing of the past. “We are working on a more flexible base and layer that holds its own and the wide array of toppings so you can eat each slice without the worry” of everything sliding off.
And without sounding too cheesy - that sounds like our idea of pizza heaven.
