With the world still feeling a little bit blue as it comes down from a whirlwind of a year, it’s okay to want something to lift your spirits a little - and what better way, than an actual spirit? (Within moderation, of course). As much as we are all for cutting down on our best-loved tipples and taking part in Dry January - especially given the wide range of incredible options now on the shelves (check out our favourites here), sometimes you just need something of what you actually fancy. Enter Gin-uary - the naughty twin of Dry Jan, and one we can definitely get behind this year. And we have found 15 insanely unique flavours so that you can make the moment something utterly special - because let’s face it - we all deserve it. So grab your favourite tonic, because it’s about to becomes all kinds of gin-tastic up in here. We even have one thats created using real Jaffa Cakes… I know, it’s wild. And we LOVE it.
Raspberry and Elderflower - Didsbury Gin
Didsbury are no strangers to the Consommé team - they are one of our favourite brands due to their incredible and unique flavour combinations and by always thinking outside the box. And their Raspberry and Elderflower Gin (£14.95, Didsbury Gin) shows just that. A bright and zesty gin that is packed full of flavour. Made using only 100% real fruit, Didsbury stay true to their ethos in offering only the highest quality - no matter what the flavour.
Raspberry Crush - Brighton Gin
Created for ease, this all-in-one pre-mixed creation by Brighton Gin is the perfect way to enjoy a gin on the go (to the bedroom to the living room - at least till lockdown lifts). Their Raspberry Crush (£13.50, 4 bottles, Brighton Gin) is made using only natural ingredients, they have carefully combined English raspberries with Sicilian lemons and added in a hint of lavender for a refreshing drink that is packed with sweet and zesty notes and a lasting finish of their award-winning Seaside Strength gin.
Rhubarb and Ginger - Jawbox
Created to excite and tantalise the tastebuds, Jawbox have taken the classic combination of tart rhubarb with some fiery ginger and created a product that is perfect all year round. Their Rhubarb and Ginger Gin (£22.94, Amazon) has been dubbed as jaw-droopingly refreshing and we couldn’t agree more. You get notes of the sweet and tangy rhubarb which is balanced with the warming ginger which are the perfect match for their infamous gin.
Turkish Delight - Zymurgorium Gin Co / Prezzy Box
Taking a British well-loved confection and turning it into a delightfully playful gin is exactly what Zymurgorium is known for and their Turkish Delight Gin (£20, Prezzy Box) is exactly that - a true delight. Imagine taking a Turkish Delight, melting it down and drinking it and thats exactly what you get - deep rose petal notes which have been distilled with rich cocoa from Africa and paired with their best-loved gin. It’s complex, it’s innovative and it’s exactly what any gin-lover with a bit of a sweet-tooth needs in their life.
Smoked - BeauFort Spirit
This gin is the aftermath of extensive research into the British Navy and guided by the desire to push the gin category to the edge - something we love here at Consommé. Thinking outside the gin-in-the-box. And this amazing gin, which is the flagship (no pun intended) product for BeauFort Spirit. Their ‘Fifty-Seven’ Smoked Sipping Gin (£39, Beaufort Spirit) which is powerfully infused but without lingering. Giving you a punch when you need it, and just happy memories when you don’t.
Jaffa Cake Gin
Created using real Jaffa Cake’s this gin is the proof that two timeless classics can perfectly come together and create something truly beautiful. The Jaffa Cake Gin (£27.85, Jaffa Cake Gin) adds fresh orange peel and cocoa powder alongside the real deal to create an utter nostalgic treat which is part zingy, part velvety chocolate and all round incredible. Expect vanilla on the nose and almonds on the palate with a lasting earthy juniper finish.
Damson - Dockyard Gin, Copper Rivet Distillery
This contemporary take on a classic navel gin, celebrating the docks that they (and our Editor) calls home - in Medway. This incredible product is crafted through their unique hand-made copper still which they infuse with only the finest botanicals sourced from across the globe. Their Damson Gin (£29, Copper Rivet Distillery) It’s dry but has subtle citrus notes and is finished with a spicy kick tied together with locally-sourced juicy damsons that adds just the right amount of tartness.
Chilli and Lime - Sipsmith
This limited-edition product from the infamous Sipsmith Gin is not for the feint of heart. Created for the daring sipper, Sipsmith have perfectly managed to marry together two strong flavours and the result - a Chilli and Lime Gin (£29, Sipsmith which blends over seven fruits and complex chillies, including the Scotch Bonnet and adds just the right amount of sour and zesty Asian limes which are super juicy to help balance it all out and last on the tongue as the chilli mellows out over the course of your sipping adventure.
Honey - The Apiarist
Honey is one of our favourite things here at Consommé - it holds a special place in our heart - and with this delicious creation from The Apiarist (£39, The Apiarist Gin) who infuses their gin with raw honey from their very own apiary resulting in an incredible golden colour and delivers a bold gin which is sweet to start, has notes of zesty lemon and has been combined with their secret ingredient - black tea, which finishes on the palate with earthy notes. The Apiarist state that ‘black tea, lemon and honey have been popular flavour combinations for centuries’ and they have put an adult stamp on that classic. And we couldn’t bee more in love.
Baked Apple and Salted Caramel - Poetic License/ Melted Inside
Taking two of our favourite ingredients and turning them into our favourite spirit - we had high hopes for this Baked Apple and Salted Caramel Gin (£19.95, Melted Inside) from Poetic License and thankfully it exceeded them. This bottle of liquid amber goodness is a combination of sweet cooked apple that has notes of warming cinnamon on the palate. Added sweetness comes next from the seasoned caramel which lingers just long enough to give you all the nostalgic feels of warm apple pies cooling on the window sill. We can guarantee this one will be a special purchase.
Rosé - Mirabeau Rosé Gin
This beautifully pale pink Mirabeau Rose Gin (£35, Waitrose), which was inspired by the abundance of botanicals growing near their estate in the idyllic Saint Tropaz looks just as incredible as it tastes, which is no wonder why it’s a multiple-award-winning gin. Steeped in a culture of the world-famous perfume trade this original gin by Mirabeau pays tribute to that and keeps its roots at its core. Crafted from a 100% grape-based neutral spirit with lemon, coriander and rose petals this dry gin leaves a lasting finish of the herbaceous nature. You’ll be able to pick out notes of lavender and jasmine but don’t be put off by it’s floral perfumed counterpart - this gin is super subtle with a loving softness that makes it perfect for sipping.
Spiced Sloe - Hayman’s
No.1 Wildflower - Cotswolds Distillery
Known for producing premium spirits, Cotswolds Distillery is home to a varied selection of delicious gins - including their Wildflower range. Our favourite being the first of the two. No.1 Wildflower (£34.95, Cotswold Distillery) due to its dry finish and floral notes. Inspired by the grasslands of their roots in the Cotswolds and described as capturing the summer meadows you can expect this to be as fruity as it is fresh with lavender, orange and cornflowers shining through. The perfect drink to take you to warmer days.
Blood Orange and Ginger - Didsbury Gin
Now we don’t want to seem like we are playing favourites, but when you are sipping on a gin as crisp and clean as this one, you just have to include. Didsbury Gin have created their Blood Orange and Ginger gin (£14.95, Didsbury Gin) that is as bright and vibrant in taste as it is in colour. You get kicked on the tongue with the citrus-fronted flavours that are zesty and sour mellowed out by the warmth of fresh ginger coming through and balancing out the sweetness. A brilliant full-bodied gin that is great with a premium tonic or in an adventurously fruity cocktail.
Coriander - Sacred Gin
Using a unique vacuum distilling process, Sacred Gin are able to intensify the taste of their organically sourced botanicals and this citrus-spice led gin is the perfect flavour for any adventurous gin-lovers. Using Indian Coriander Seeds combined with crushed black peppercorns and Amalfi Lemon Zest, Sacred Gin’s Coriander Gin (£33.95, Sacred Gin) is potent without being overpowering. You get tart citrus notes with a sweet earthy undertone.
